We all know someone blessed by the gods with a metabolism which allows them to eat whatever they want, but they don’t seem to put on weight. Yes, they may have been blessed with the ability to burn through a lot of calories, but there are 8 simple things YOU can do to increase YOUR metabolic rate. (Complaining about your lucky slim friend is not one of the eight!)
- Drink more water
Water is the only thing we can’t live without. Each and every cell in our bodies needs water to operate. This is the very reason we can’t expect to have a fast metabolism if our bodily cells aren’t properly hydrated. When our cells are properly hydrated, they can function more optimally. Optimal function = more calories burnt
- Eat little and often
Your metabolism works a little like a campfire. You don’t put one big lump of wood on a fire and expect it to burn brightly. You add smaller pieces of wood regularly allowing the wood to burn efficiently. With that being said, skipping meals or eating a big meal or two throughout the day doesn’t allow your metabolism to work optimally. If you are looking to lose weight, 3 small healthy meals as well as 2 small healthy snacks is perfect to help you reach you weight loss goals.
- Get loads of sleep
Although the amount of sleep needed varies between individuals, it is widely accepted that 7-8 hours sleep per day is the sweet spot. The amount of sleep we get has an impact on the production of two very important hormones. When we don’t get enough sleep, we tend to produce too much ghrelin, which makes us feel hungry. We also produce less leptin when we don’t sleep enough which is the hormone responsible for making us feel full. Getting enough sleep therefore keeps these hormones in the correct balance keeping our appetite in check allowing you to burn more fat.
- Getting enough B Vitamins
Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B6 (pyridoxine) all pay a key part in boosting our metabolisms. You can make sure you are getting your daily dose by buying a B vitamin supplement from your local health food shop, or by eating more of the following foods:
- Whole grains
- High Intensity Workouts
Adding HIIT training, high intensity interval training, to your regime can have a great impact on your metabolic rate. With this style of training you can benefit from burning calories during your workout, as well as after your workout (after burn effect).
HIIT involves a high intensity phase and an active recovery phase such as sprinting for 60 seconds, and then walking or jogging for 2 minutes and then repeating this as many times as you are able.
- Green tea!
Although this is not completely proven scientifically, there is bundles of research that suggests that green tea extracts have a positive impact on the body’s ability to metabolise fat.
The other benefit to green tea is it doesn’t contain as much caffeine as coffee which dehydrates you (not good for fat loss). Green tea actually goes towards you water intake which is handy as hydration is key to your metabolism working efficiently.
- Weight Training
Weight training increases the amount of lean muscle in the body. More lean muscle results in a faster metabolism as these muscles need to be supplied with energy in the form of fat and carbohydrates. For our female readers, rest assured, you will not get muscular overnight. You will slowly become more toned as you add small amounts of muscle mass and burn more fat.
- Reduce Stress
When we are stressed, we produce more cortisol which is a naturally occurring hormone in our bodies. Increased cortisol levels have been scientifically proven to increase the amount of fat we store in our bodies. As well as this, stress has a negative impact on our quality of sleep, which is of course needed to improve our metabolic rate.
So, there you have it, 8 simple ways to increase your fat burning potential. The best thing about this list as it can all be started right away or as early as you like! If you’d like help with your meal prep, check our our transformation plans www.winnys-meals.com/transformation-plans
